In 2012, Hurricane Sandy caused substantial damage across the coasts of the Northeast. Today, the United States Army Corp of Engineers (USACOE) and the State of Rhode Island are working to repair the beach area and the easterly breakwater at Point Judith in Narragansett.
DiPrete Engineering has teamed up with RC & D Construction, a civil and environmental contractor that specializes in marine construction, to provide pre-construction survey, bathymetric survey, construction survey and as-built services.
“This is an interesting and challenging survey project,” said Bob Babcock, Land Surveying Dept. Manager, at DiPrete Engineering. “We are working with huge rocks, coastal weather and short timetables,”
The beach area repair consisted of building a revetment of large boulders, rock and sand to provide erosion protection to the coast. Partially destroyed by the storm, the breakwater is now under construction. The team is currently placing new, car-sized stones along the breakwater to create a solid jetty.
“Thanks to our close working relationship with RC & D Construction and USACOE, we are on the track to success,” added Babcock.
Breakwater repairs are projected to be complete by the end of 2016.
