Q&A with Jakob Cruikshank, Civil Engineer at DiPrete Engineering

Q: Prior to joining DiPrete Engineering’s team, what were you doing?

A: Before joining the DiPrete Engineering team over two years ago, I was an active student at the University of Rhode Island. During my senior year I had the exciting opportunity to be the president for the school’s Institute of Transportation Engineer’s chapter (ITE), as well as the teacher’s assistant for a Highway Engineering class.


Q: Why did you choose to go into the engineering field?

A: Ever since I was a kid I always found myself taking things apart and figuring out how and why they worked. I’d always go off the beaten path to see if there was a way to innovate something that I believed could be improved. Being a Civil Engineer allows a new opportunity every day to ask the “how” and “why” questions that help me grow professionally and create the best possible outcome for our clients.


Q: What has been the most challenging project that you’ve worked on?

A: As my engineering career is continuously evolving, every project that I’ve been involved with has challenged me in one way or another. Whether it’s a small site with little room for design or a large complex project, the team here at DiPrete has been extremely helpful along the way with getting the job done.


Q: What inspires you most about your work?

A: Designing, in general. Sitting down with the project team to brainstorm the most efficient design while also striving to exceed the client’s expectations is something I look forward to with every new project that comes through the door.


Q: How do you enjoy spending your time outside of engineering?

A: I’m currently a mentor in the Architecture/Construction/Engineering ACE Mentoring program (ACE) at the Rhode Island School of Design. Through ACE I’m able to work with high school students on design projects while providing the knowledge and support they need to spark interest and get them excited for the next educational steps in their technical careers. I also enjoy cooking and traveling.
