Steve Kohm, Civil Engineer

Q: What were you doing prior to joining DiPrete Engineering? How did you decide to become a Civil Engineer?

A: Before joining DiPrete Engineering I was working at the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, DC on a variety of remediation and land revitalization projects. I decided to become a Civil Engineer because I wanted to see land become developed/redeveloped and put back to beneficial use in my home state.

Q: What are some of the largest projects you’ve worked on? Did you encounter any challenges? If so, how did you overcome them?

A: The largest projects I’ve worked on have been commercial-scale solar arrays. It can become really challenging when dealing with such large areas and trying to route/retain stormwater while maximizing the area dedicated to the harvesting of green energy. To overcome these challenges, I worked closely with regulators and colleagues to optimize our design and facilitate an efficient layout that can benefit not only our client, but everyone flicking on their light switch.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?

A: I enjoy being involved in projects that begin as an idea and later transition to construction. It is really satisfying when your hard work allows for the redevelopment of an underused property and you actually get to drive by and see the results.

Q: Can you recall one of your proudest moments while working at DiPrete?

A: One of my proudest moments while working at DiPrete has been receiving RIDEM approval for our commercial-scale solar arrays. Having another professional review your work and agree with your design is always an awesome feeling. It’s great to be able to tell our clients we have cleared another hurdle and are that much closer to construction.

Q: How do you enjoy spending your time outside of work?
A: When I am not at work, I enjoy going to the beach, playing golf, skiing, and watching football. I also love to swim. This year I completed the Save the Bay Swim for the third time. I’m looking forward to swimming it again next year!
