The effort started with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), a group of 16 women founded in Fort Worth, Texas during the 1950s. These women were all actively employed in the construction industry and were looking for a support system. Back then, only 8.9 percent of those working in the U.S. construction industry were women, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Today, engineering, construction, and architectural firms (among others) across the country celebrate their female employees in hopes of encouraging other women to pursue and establish careers in the construction industry.
“From day one, our female team members have made countless contributions to the firm’s success and growth,” said Dennis DiPrete, President of DiPrete Engineering. “Many of the firm’s most challenging projects are led by women.”
